21 февраля (5 марта) 1873 г. Тургенев обратился к брату, Н. С. Тургеневу, с просьбой поручить издателю Ф. И. Салаеву выслать ему в Баден-Баден полный экземпляр его сочинений, изданных в 1868–1871 гг., чтобы начать подготовку нового собрания сочинений. В мае 1874 г. подготовительная работа была завершена, и Тургенев написал предисловие к новому изданию. В конце того же года все восемь частей собрания сочинений были напечатаны, и оно поступило в продажу.
