Впервые напечатано в газете «Русские ведомости», 1893, номер 213, 5 августа. Рассказ был передан редакции «Русских ведомостей» без ведома А.М.Горького его товарищем Н.З.Васильевым. Опубликование «Емельяна Пиляя» в «Русских ведомостях» было первым выступлением Горького в столичной прессе. Рассказ включался во все собрания сочинений. Печатается по тексту, подготовленному М.Горьким для собрания сочинений в издании «Книга».
