भारत का स्त्री विमर्श चूँकि पश्चिम के वूमेन लिव का प्रतिफलन है, अतः स्वाभाविक ही था कि भारतीय स्त्रीवादी चिंतन को उस पश्चिमी नजरिए से देखा गया, जहाँ औरत की आजादी का मतलब है—पुरुष की बराबरी। इस सोच को हवा देने में हमारे यहाँ के बुद्धिजीवी भी पीछे नहीं रहे। उनका कहना है, ‘‘स्त्रीमुक्ति की हर यात्रा उसकी देह से शुरू होती है।’’
इस प्रकार के बोल्ड बयानों ने स्त्रीमुक्ति के अर्थ को विकृत किया है और अपने ‘वस्तु’ होने का विरोध करनेवाली स्त्री के लिए खुद ही वस्तु बनाए जाने के खतरों को बढ़ा दिया है। भारतीय संस्कृति से कटे ऐसे वक्तव्यों ने स्त्री स्वतंत्रता और स्वच्छंदता की विभाजक रेखा को मिटाकर दोनों में किस प्रकार घालमेल किया है, इसका प्रमाण हैं स्त्रीविमर्श के नाम पर परोसी गई ऐसी कहानियाँ, जिनमें स्त्री स्वतंत्रता के नाम पर स्वच्छंदता की दुहाई दी गई है।
